Brown Sketch Book

This is a random sketch I made today in my brown paper sketch book. I have a lot of fun with this under used sketch book that I purchased from Art Media for $1. I like to use black ink pens, and high light with a white gel pen.

Who doesn't like to draw six armed snake men who wear a fez? Not me!

Wolverine Quick Paint

Hey ya'll. Took a few minutes this evening to make a digital quick sketch of everybody's favorite Canadian.

This was just meant as a quick doodle, but I think I may return to it for some refining and polish.

If only we all had Logan's universal health care we could run around town all willy nilly slicing each others limbs off with our adamantium blades, with out any fear of a trip to the E.R.

Sketch Book

A doodle in my sketch book from a couple of days ago. Trying to make sketch posts a more daily type experience on this blog of mine.

Flying Salmon

I've always wanted to paint a salmon flying over some fruit trees. I can now check that one off my bucket list.

Space Hippy

I am thinking about adding some color to this drawing and posting it on the Avalanche Art Blog, where the theme at the moment is "Space Man".

Wrinkles

Getting ready to move has been keeping me really busy this past week. Today was no exception with lots and lots of running around town. I made sure I had an hour to sit down and draw in photo shop before I conked out tonight. This lovely lady is a scan of a drawing I made in church a while back. I decided to make it into a wrinkle drawing practice.

On To Something New

I am excited to announce that early last week I accepted an intern position at Avalanche Studios in Salt lake City where I will be working on video games for Disney.

In approximately 8 days we will be loading a moving van and driving to our new home in American Fork, Utah.

I've been busy planning, packing, and saying goodbye to all my friends in Portland. I am really going to miss P-town, after living here for the past several years it has really grown on me and I consider it home.

On to the next adventure!

Wippy WIP

In my spare time I have been working on a female model and I thought I would make some renders to show my progress on my blog. Eventually she will be fully clothed and posed. I have decided on this project to only use Maya for the modeling and detail as a way to practice techniques in good edge flow modeling. Still a lot of refinement to go.

I'm glad I took the time to make some renders as it has pointed me to some areas that really need some refinement in the modeling. I've set the body modeling on hold while I've been working on some of the clothing that she will be wearing. I should have an update on that pretty soon here. If anybody might be interested in seeing any of the wire frames I would be happy to post some as well.

ELROD

Last night I was finally able to attend one of the PAGDIG (Portland Game Developer Interest Group) meetings here in Portland. This one happened to be held at my alma mater the Art Institute of Portland.

A Gentleman by the name of Corvus Elrod (Man Bytes Blog) was speaking, and I of course had my sketch book in hand as I listened to his presentation and life experience regarding the ins and outs of networking. A large focus of his speaking was aimed at blogging and the networking available through that medium. His, being a story teller I can easily see how blogging would be an effective method of displaying his talents. Of course this rings double true for us in the visual arts as well.

So when I got home last night I decided to make some art to blog. So here is my representation of Elrod from last night. I was playing again with the method of using color pencil and swiping it with an alcohol swab to get some nice texture and blending. This time I swiped it a couple of times, once after the initial black pencil drawing, and again after the color block in. I then grabbed some white liquid tempura and painted in some highlights and brightened it up. Finishing it off with a black ink pen.

Monkey Boy

An art card I made last night. Trying to experiment a little with a technique I saw a while back on a gnomon DVD. I started with a blank card and a black color pencil and scribbled about till some forms started to appear.

I thought maybe some crazy alien nutso beastly thing would start to come about. But nope, just Monkey Boy. After I got some forms sketched in I took some alcohol swabs and smeared the pencil all over, then touched up with eraser, color pencil, more black pencil, and some ink.

Octo WIP progress

Haven't posted in a few so I thought this would be a good little update to keep things fresh.

This Octopus WIP has been sitting on the back burner for a while, been uber busy with work lately. During some spare time over the past couple of days I added a toss away rig to the tentacles and posed him up a little bit. The tentacles still need tweaking and cleaning up and they are probably about twice as long as I would have preferred them. When things slow down I will finish texturing and posing him.

All Done

Got a little busy. But I submitted in time. Good fun, good practice. I went through and deleted all the progress posts. Kind of redundant I think. You can go HERE to check out all the entry's from the 3dTotal forum, including my entry.

General thumbnails

A few quick little thumbnail sketches to get me started on my model. I probably should do more of these but I am eager to get started as there is only a little less than a week left in the competition. I am leaning towards #1... or 2 or 7. What do you think?

Speed Sculpt

Once again it is time for the Dominance War. They are having a mini challenge this year before the main event. The theme is "War General Portraits" I just found out about it this morning. Tomorrow I plan on working on the concept for my 3D General's portrait.

With this and the epic portion of the Dominance war fast approaching there should be many frequent blog posts to come.

To warm up today I made a speed sculpt using one of the three required base meshes for the competition. This is not the direction I plan on going with the challenge, just a mindless sculpt to get myself ready for it.
